BRIGHT SOMEWHERE - Behind the Scenes Album Recording AT STUDIO G

Roles: Director | post supervisor

Summary: A vérité-style look inside the making of Kate Schutt’s Bright Somewhere, capturing a week of raw, collaboration with world-class musicians at Studio G Brooklyn.

FULL ALBUM RECORDING

I spent a week at Studio G Brooklyn documenting the making of Bright Somewhere, the new album from singer-songwriter Kate Schutt. The brief was simple: be present but invisible. Acting as a fly on the wall, I captured candid, unscripted moments of collaboration between Kate and a world-class ensemble of musicians and producers.

At the helm was Emmy-winning, Grammy-nominated producer and arranger Rob Mounsey, whose legendary credits include Graceland, Gaucho, and artists like Paul Simon, Steely Dan, and Aretha Franklin. Engineering was led by Kevin Killen, eight-time Grammy winner known for David Bowie’s Blackstar, Peter Gabriel, and U2; and Jay Newland, twelve-time Grammy winner behind Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me.

The studio band featured Jon Herington, longtime guitarist for Steely Dan; drummer Chris Parker, known for his work with Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, and Quincy Jones; and Richard Hammond, bassist for Joan Osborne, Carlos Santana, and Angelique Kidjo.

The footage stays true to the spirit of the record: honest, human, and deeply musical. The resulting behind-the-scenes video racked up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, with cutdowns shared across social media to support the album’s release.
